Why we called it Sela
Sela is the Indonesian word for a gap: the space between two stones, the opening in a wall you almost walk past. We chose it because that’s exactly what this place is: a small opening in the noise of the city, with a garden behind it.

What makes matcha ceremonial grade
Ceremonial grade means the tea was grown in shade, stone-ground slowly, and made from the youngest leaves of the first harvest. It’s the grade meant to be drunk on its own, whisked with water, with nothing to hide behind.

Building the garden: notes from before opening
The wall is up, and the moss is taking hold faster than we hoped. Most days right now are stone, soil, and paint: the unglamorous middle of making something quiet.
